My name is Sally Casper and I am a high school Biology teacher at Glen Rock High School in Glen Rock, NJ. At Glen Rock I am the JV Cheerleading coach, the advisor for the Class of 2010, I do the choreography for the musicals and I am also the advisor for the quiz bowl. I also have a part time job at the Buehler Challenger and Science Center in Paramus. Eventually someday I would like to become Science Department Chair and then an Asst. Principal or Principal. This class is a requirement for my Master's in Biology with a concentration in Science Education that I am currently working on. I plan on working on my Administration and Supervision degree after that.
I have two wonderful parents, my mom is also a Biology Teacher and my dad is a Police Officer. And I have two brothers who love to tease me, which I always thought they would grow out of by now! One is a sophomore in college and the other is a junior in high school. My family has a cute dog named Maggie, she is a beagle and my family adores her. I also have an amazing boyfriend and he is a computer programmer for a health care software company. Dan is a great runner; he ran the NJ Marathon this past May in under 3 and half hours.
When I am not working and doing all these other things I like to be by the water, I love the shore and I love boats. I also like to read and exercise. And at night you can often find me grading papers and watching some TV to relax.

Sally- With two parents grounded in public service, it is no surprise you became a teacher!
Dogs are great aren't they? I have a 7 year old black lab. He's 85lbs but thinks he is a lap dog.
When you teach science, what philosophy do you subscribe to; inquiry based, content based, or thematic? (or something else?) I find that student usually love or hate biology; usually no "middles". Do you see the same thing?
It sounds like you keep yourself busy! It's great that you are involved in so many things and that you have ambitions to be a principal. Why do you want to be a principal? I'm just curious because many of our peers are in their supervisor program (I am not) and wonder what the appeal is (aside from the pay increase, of course).
Sally, wow and I thought I was busy. Sounds like you have it together and that many students are benefiting from all the fabulous things you guide them in from the choreography for the musicals to advising the quiz bowl.
I agree with Barry, students seem to always love or hate science courses. What is your take on that as a Biology teacher?
When I teach I seem to use many philosophies. One day Imght be doing inquiry and another day I might be lecturing. I think that it is important for students centered learning but I also believe where there are times that the students benefit from a lecture style class. For example, the other day I did stations in class for teh characteristics of life and I had students loko at objects and organisms and determining if they were alive or not based on the characteristics that they exhibit however this week I will be doing a power point on Food Webs, Food Chains and Energy Pyraminds. So, I have a lot of different teaching stategies - keeps the students guessing. And over the last 2 years I have found that since I am passionate about Biology, they at least have a respect for the subject even if they don't "love it."
And I would like to be a principal someday because I have a great principal right now and he is a huge inspiration to most people in my school and I would really like to have a chance to do some of the things that he does. And because I really enjoy education and I think I would really enjoy being a principal.
Hi fellow science teacher! I am an earth science teacher and I absolutely love it. I feel I use a variety of strategies as well. One day inquiry, the next content etc. I feel it keeps the students interested.
Hi Sally- Thanks for your support. I agree with you that it is an extremely tough job but I hope to someday be in that position of leadership. I am the head football coach at Emerson and I know a couple of your football coaches at Glen Rock! Good Luck with everything. It sounds like you have a very busy schedule.
The water is so relaxing. It creates this calming effect for me. Your parents remind me of my fiance and myself and officer and a teacher. What was that like growing up?
I am your neighbor in Ridgewood! sounds like you have a busy schedule
Oh sally you are so busy! No wonder why you can't car pool. Your little brothers still shouldn't be teasing you. Put them into place. You are the older sister.
